Our Philosophy of Education

 Philosophy of Education

At Barefoot Grove, we believe education is not merely the transfer of information, but the cultivation of the whole child—heart, mind, body, and soul—within the context of family, faith, and community.

We exist to support families in raising healthy, capable, curious, and grounded children through a biblical, nature-rich, relationship-centered approach to learning.

Rooted in a Christian Worldview

At the heart of Barefoot Grove is the belief that all truth belongs to God and that learning is an act of worship.

We believe:

  • Scripture provides the moral and spiritual framework for understanding the world

  • Character, wisdom, and virtue matter more than educational achievement

Biblical truth is woven naturally into daily rhythms through:

  • Scripture readings and storytelling

  • Character formation and habits of attention

  • Stewardship of creation

  • Community life marked by grace, responsibility, and love

Rather than separating faith from learning, we see education as part of discipleship—shaping children who know how to think, discern, and live faithfully.

Freedom With Responsibility

(Influenced by Danish Parenting Values and An Anxious Generation)

We value a childhood that is deeply relational.

Inspired by Danish approaches to parenting and education, we emphasize:

  • Play as essential, not optional. Play is work for kids; research shows kids who have free unstructured play with other kids develop cognitively, socially, and physically.

  • Outdoor time in all seasons

  • Trust in children’s developing independence

  • Risky Play builds self esteem and confidence.

This balance cultivates resilience, confidence, and emotional maturity.

A Wild + Free Approach to Learning

We believe learning should feel alive.

Barefoot Grove draws from the Wild + Free philosophy by:

  • Honoring curiosity and wonder

  • Prioritizing nature, movement, and creativity

  • Valuing handmade work over screen-based output

  • Encouraging deep dives into meaningful topics

  • Allowing space for imagination, exploration, and rest

We resist the pressure to rush childhood or over-schedule learning. Instead, we create an environment where children can linger, ask questions, make things with their hands, and build lasting relationships.

Families at the Center

Parents are the primary educators of their children. Barefoot Grove exists to support the family. We hope to be a community of collected ideas, shared knowledge, and women who encourage and strengthen each other through this season of motherhood.  We intentionally create space for:

  • Mothers to feel encouraged, refreshed, and connected

  • Families to learn with and from each other

  • Intergenerational relationships

  • Shared traditions and seasonal rhythms

We value:

  • Attention over achievement

  • Wisdom over information

  • Habits over hacks

  • Character over credentials

We trust that children who are rooted, curious, and well-formed will naturally grow into capable learners and thoughtful adults.
